Some essential oils are dangerous goods for shipping, but the category name alone does not determine classification. The exact oil or blend, its composition and physical properties, and the applicable air, sea or road rules must be assessed. Flammability and environmental hazards can be relevant. A natural, organic or alcohol-free claim does not establish that a product is unregulated for transport.
For marketplace sellers, resellers and wholesale traders, the first step is to request product-specific information from the manufacturer or authorised supplier. Submit it for a dangerous-goods review before agreeing the shipping method or releasing stock. See Essential Oils Shipping for Businesses for the product overview.
Review the product you will actually ship, including any dilution, added ingredients or change in formulation. One supplier's document should not automatically be applied to another manufacturer's oil with a similar name.
| Factor | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Manufacturer, SKU, botanical identity where applicable, and whether it is a pure oil or blend | Connects the evidence to the actual goods |
| Composition | Constituents, concentrations and any carrier oils, alcohol or solvents | Different formulations can have different hazards |
| Physical properties | Relevant test data, including flash point and test method where applicable | Supports the assessment of flammability |
| Environmental hazards | Aquatic-hazard information and any marine-pollutant assessment | Environmental controls may apply as well as other hazards |
| Transport mode | Air, sea and the road legs of the proposed route | Applicable rules and preparation requirements can differ |
| Shipment configuration | Bottle or drum size, quantity per package and total shipment details | Determines which packing and quantity provisions need review |
Classification and carrier acceptance are separate decisions. Even a correctly classified product needs an operator that accepts the proposed shipment. Use Dangerous Goods Shipping to understand the service review.
Tell the reviewer the proposed transport mode and the collection and delivery locations. A sea shipment can include road movements, and an air service can include more than one operating carrier.
| Transport leg | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Air | Applicable air-transport classification, packing instruction, quantity limits and state or operator restrictions |
| Sea | Applicable IMDG Code classification, marine-pollutant provisions and carrier acceptance |
| Road | Applicable national or regional requirements for collection, transit and delivery |
Changing mode does not remove the need to assess the product. Likewise, a small retail bottle does not automatically make a consignment exempt. Any exception must be checked against the actual classification, package and applicable rules.
Identify your buying country and delivery market through the shipping routes overview, then request a review for the exact product and endpoint.
Build one file for each SKU or clearly identified formulation. Ask the manufacturer or authorised supplier for:
If the supplier cannot provide enough information, submit what is available and identify the gaps. Do not fill them by copying a classification from another oil or an online marketplace listing.
For a separate consignment of finished fragrances, use the commercial perfume shipping guide; do not assume its classification applies to essential oils.
An SDS brings together useful product information, but it is supporting evidence, not a booking approval. These sections can help the reviewer:
| SDS section | Information to check |
|---|---|
| 1: Identification | Product identifier, supplier and contact details |
| 2 and 3: Hazards and composition | Reported hazards and substance or mixture information |
| 9: Physical and chemical properties | Relevant properties such as flash point, where applicable |
| 12: Ecological information | Available environmental-hazard data |
| 14: Transport information | Transport classification, environmental hazards and mode-specific entries where provided |
Missing, contradictory or outdated entries need clarification. Ask the manufacturer or distributor for a corrected document or supporting evidence; testing or advice from the competent authority may be needed. Workplace hazard pictograms and customs tariff codes do not replace transport classification.
Once the classification is established, have the competent operator confirm the permitted packaging for the proposed mode and quantities. A retail gift box or leak-resistant closure alone does not establish transport compliance.
Agree who will supply the packaging, pack the goods, apply required marks and labels, and prepare any dangerous-goods transport document. Use appropriately trained personnel or a qualified provider for the functions they perform. The shipper remains responsible for offering a correctly prepared shipment.
If supplier collection is requested, confirm the preparation requirements before collection is arranged. If several suppliers or SKUs are involved, request a consolidation review before goods are combined. Acceptance of one oil does not establish acceptance of a mixed consignment.
For your enquiry, identify the intended use: a raw ingredient, a finished cosmetic, a fragrance product or another application. That helps establish which destination checks are needed.
Use the customs clearance service overview to prepare questions about the importer, product description, origin and destination documentation. Transport acceptance does not establish permission to import, market or sell the product. Submit labels, claims and sales-channel details for any separate product review required.
Send the product file with the supplier's dispatch location, destination, receiving business, intended use and required delivery date. For stock intended for the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Australia, identify the exact receiving point. State whether the request is for samples, resale stock or repeated wholesale shipments.
Ask the quote to identify the accepted configuration and mode, preparation responsibilities, collection and delivery scope, and any unresolved conditions. For budgeting, use the landed cost guide to separate freight and handling from duties, taxes, approvals and other costs.
No single classification applies to the entire category. Have the exact product assessed using its composition, properties and applicable transport rules.
Alcohol-free wording does not establish transport status. Other constituents and hazards may still be relevant, so request product-specific evidence.
It is a useful starting point. Incomplete or inaccurate transport entries need clarification, and the package, route and carrier must also be reviewed.
Do not assume so from bottle size. Any available relief depends on the classification, applicable rules and complete packing configuration.
Request a separate sea-freight assessment. Sea transport has its own requirements, including marine-pollutant provisions where applicable, and needs carrier acceptance.
Do not assume it does. Submit the new manufacturer's product information and shipment details for review before dispatch.
